Debate on the Influence of Sugar Industry on US National Dental Health Research and Policy

In March 2015 an article entitled ”Sugar Industry influence on the Scientific Agenda of the National Institute of Dental Research’s 1971 National Caries Program : A Historical Analysis of Internal Documents” was published in PLOS Medicine (DOI : 10.1371/journal.pmed.1001796). The authors reported long effort in the 1960s and 1970s by the US sugar industry to influence research programs of the National Institute of Dental Research revealing a concerted effort to shift the research agenda away from reducing sucrose consumption and towards mitigating its harm. While the publication of the article gained widespread coverage and attention, it also drawn strong response from the World Sugar Research Organization, immediately followed by the author’s rebuttal.
