The three following echapters are available on Glycopedia :
- Overview of Immune Responses : A Primer. http://www.glycopedia.eu/Introduction-429
- Anti-cancer Immunotherapy http://www.glycopedia.eu/Introduction-440
- Synthesis and Immunological Properties of Tumor-Associated Carbohydrate Antigens based Anticancer Vaccines http://www.glycopedia.eu/Introduction-447
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in developed countries ; although surgical resection, direct irradiation, and cytotoxic chemotherapy represent nowadays the main treatment options for patients suffering from malignancies, their severe side effects and the need of multi-therapy settings paved the way for the rise in popularity of antitumoral immunotherapy.
In order to provide a practical and usable document which can be addressed to a non-specialist public, we first outlined some basic immunology reminders for a better understanding of the subject, resulting in the chapter called : “Overview of Immune Responses”. A second chapter referred to as : “Anti-cancer Immunotherapy”, was conceived to unfold the plethora of possible approaches which exploit the human immune system to fight cancer disease, with a focus on active immunotherapy and anticancer vaccines based on tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs). The key points to enable TACA-directed immune responses were discussed in the last part of this second chapter, preparing the reader for the third chapter : “Synthesis and Immunological Properties of TACA-based Anticancer Vaccines”, where synthetic methods and immunological results of some of the most representative examples in literature were reported and discussed.
